|
| #10: The “Irony?-What’s-that?” Award | |

And the Carboney goes to: General Motors Corp., maker of the ice-cap-melting Hummer! “Introducing the new 2007 limited edition H2 in Glacier Blue“ |
| #9: The “Global-warming?-The-air-conditioner-still-works” Award | |
|
And the Carboney goes to: President George W. Bush! ”We–first of all, there is–the globe is warming. The fundamental debate, is it manmade or natural. Put that aside.” (March 29, 2006) |
| #8: The “It’s-really-a-UN-commie-New-World-Order-population-control-plan” Award | |
![]() |
And the Carboney goes to: Oklahoma Senator and former chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, James Inhofe! I think we can be assured that the new Committe chair, Barbara Boxer, will never utter, “The threat of catastrophic global warming [is] the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.” |
| #7: The “Yes-our-cojones-really-are-that-large” Award | |
![]() |
And the Carboney goes to: The Competitive Enterprise Institute! Please view their remarkable online videos so you too can understand that ‘CO2: they call it pollution, we call it Life!’ |
| #6: The “Global-warming?-But-what-about-Spongebob?” Award | |

And the Carboney goes to: James Dobson, founder of “Focus on the Family”! ”Global warming is not a consensus issue…We here at Focus on the Family still believe that we should devote our primary energies to the preservation of marriage, the protection of unborn babies, the support of religious liberty, and to morality and decency in the culture.” (May 19, 2006) |
| #5: The “Ok-so-we’re-not-Beyond-Petroleum-spilling” Award | |
![]() |
And the Carboney goes to: Energy conglomerate, BP! Although having a better environmental reputation than most oil giants, BP faces congressional and EPA investigations for its long record of poor maintenance on the Trans-Alaska pipeline, culminating in the temporary shutdown of the pipeline and the largest US oilfield earlier this year. |
| #4: The “Those-climate-scientists-are-cute-when-they-get-panicky” Award | |
![]() |
And the Carboney goes to: Columnist and author, George Will! For nearly a decade now, Will has been giving us the tired mantra, but 30 years ago they were panicked about global cooling. And true, a minor 30-year cooling trend was observed from roughly 1940 to 1970–a cooling perturbation that was superimposed on the overall trend of the last century: warming. Will alone seems comfortable calling these observations a panic. Real Climate presents an excellent rebuttal to Will’s theses here. |
| #3: The “Do-you-realize-we’ve-got-250-million-years-of-coal?” Award | |
![]() |
Sigh. Yes, he really did say that. |
| #2: The “I’ve-got-thermal-pane-windows-but-9-showerheads-in-each-of-my-his-n-hers-master-baths” Award | |
![]() |
And the Carboney goes to: The American McMansion! In new home construction, 39% of homes are now larger than 2400 square feet, yet average household size across the US (pdf) is only 2.6 persons. As recently as 1970, when the average household size was 3.14 persons, only 10% of new homes exceeded 2400 square feet. |
| And #1: The “Wow-gas-is-so-expensive-I’m-really-going-to-change-my-life-this-time…oh-never-mind” Award | |

And the Carboney goes to: All of us! (Again!) |

on energy issues for the New Hampshire-Main Seacoast region. Seacoast NRG, is impressive (and trust me, I’m not easy to impress). Its blogmaster, Adam, is articulate, knowledgeable, and sometimes tongue-in-cheeck funny. I especially enjoyed his “Carboney Awards”–his choice for this year’s top ten UNDER-achievers in conservation. The blog itself is pleasing to the eye, with every article usually accompanied by photographs or likenesses. The articles are fairly brief, but packed with great conservation

You did an amazing job in compiling these “Carboney” award recipients. So what does the award look like? An iceberg melting?

Thanks Janice. I’ve already got good fodder for the ‘07 awards. As for a prize, perhaps I should be like Santa Clause, and give a lump of coal?
